Utility-scale solar projects require tightly coordinated DC and AC engineering aligned with code, performance, and bankability requirements. American Power Engineers supports developers and EPCs across the full electrical scope.
Our team supports developers and EPCs with DC collection layouts, MV collection systems, inverter and transformer specifications, and POI coordination as one integrated scope rather than pieces handed between separate firms.
Utility-scale PV projects require DC and AC designs that satisfy code, meet independent engineer (IE) expectations for bankability, and remain buildable in the field. A design that models well but wasn’t checked against real construction tolerances is a common source of change orders we’re brought in to fix. We design against that from the start.
Standards our solar engineering is built against: NEC 690/691, IEEE 1547, IEEE 2800-2022, and UL 1741.
Why American Power Engineers
DC collection, MV collection, inverter, and POI engineering under one team.
Designs structured for IE review and owner expectations.
Field-tested design choices, not just modeling outputs.
Aligned with NEC 690/691, IEEE 1547, IEEE 2800, and UL 1741.
POI engineering integrated with the plant electrical design.

NEC 691 applies to large-scale PV electric supply stations meeting specific size and access-control criteria (generally installations over 5 MW with restricted public access), while NEC 690 covers PV systems more broadly. Many utility-scale projects qualify for 691, which offers more flexibility on certain requirements, but the determination depends on your specific site conditions. We confirm this early rather than assuming.
This depends on site layout, O&M strategy, and often the developer's existing equipment relationships, more than a single "better" technology. We evaluate it against your specific project goals rather than defaulting to one architecture see our take on inverter selection trade-offs for the general considerations.
Our core scope is electrical engineering DC/AC collection design, single-lines, and interconnection support. We coordinate closely with your energy yield modeling provider (PVsyst, Helioscope, etc.) to make sure the electrical design matches the assumptions in the yield model, but yield modeling itself typically sits with a separate specialist unless otherwise scoped.
Yes. We start with a technical review of the existing DC/AC design against current code requirements and interconnection status before recommending whether to proceed with the existing package or revise specific elements.
In our experience, the most common issues are string/combiner sizing that doesn't match as-procured equipment, and protection coordination that wasn't validated against the final utility interconnection requirements. Both are avoidable by keeping the electrical design and interconnection engineering under one coordinated review, which is how we structure this scope.
